From software and servers, to data storage and back-ups, the Research Computing Group (RCG) is here to help you with all your IT needs as a researcher at MSU. Options/Pricing

The Research Computing Group (RCG), in collaboration with ITC’s Academic Computing and Network Services (ACNS) and the Office of the Vice President for Research, provides computational resources and data storage and management services for the campus on a cost recovery basis. Clients interested in these services will be advised by RCG/ACNS staff as to the best, most cost-effective solutions to meet their needs.

 

The information below is meant as a guideline and does not fully encompass all of the services that RCG can provide. Please contact RCG for a full consultation in order to best assess your needs.

SERVER CHOICES

 

Virtual Private Servers are offered with subscription pricing. Three levels of server configurations are available; a client can renegotiate server configuration mid-contract if space and memory are inadequate.

DATA STORAGE

 

The Research Computing Group offers data storage services for bulk storage of research data, digital media, and other digital assets. This storage is handled by an on-campus storage cloud, which provides advanced RAID technology to ensure the safety, security, and integrity of the stored data. Back ups of bulk storage occur nightly and are kept until the next backup occurs.

Data Storage:

Bulk data storage is offered on a subscription basis.

PHYSICAL MACHINE HOSTING

 

In a limited capacity RCG can also host physical machines. Hosting is priced on a “per rack unit” basis at $350/year per unit, with an installation fee of $50 per unit, and includes multiple IP addresses and DNS records. Physical access by a client to the service area is limited to Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, from 9am to 4:30pm.

SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION SERVICES

 

Services covered by system administration services include, but are not limited to:

  • Adding/Removing/Modifying Users – RCG will work with the client to identify who has or needs access to the server, and can create additional full and limited access users as needed.
  • Security Updates – vendor-supplied security patches are applied to installed software application as well as operating systems.
  • Automated Server and Service Monitoring – RCG routinely checks servers to ensure they are online and operating properly. The RCG administration team is notified immediately of a failure.
  • Software Installation – We provide web server installation, database software installation (not including licensing costs), and user management.

Virtual Machine System Administration:

  • $1250/Yr1  - $1500/Yr1 for Basic/Standard Servers
  • $2500/Yr1 for Enterprise Servers
  • $5000/Yr1 for High Security Servers (e.g. handling private, secure or export-restricted data)
  • Hosted Physical Machine System Administration: Negotiated on a per machine basis.
