A program to provide students with an awareness of opportunities arising from the technology associated with the various aspects of cyberinfrastructure has been awarded by NSF EPSCoR. We are now seeking students from eligible universities to participate in a yearlong program designed to engage and prepare undergraduate and graduate students in learning about and using cyberinfrastructure (CI).

EPSCoR eligible institutions include all universities in the following states: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawai’i, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, U.S. Virgin Islands, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Areas to be explored include high performance computing (HPC), high throughput computing (HTC)—including parallel programming, campus-wide grids, national grids (XSEDE, OSG), virtual organizations, data (mining, management, file systems/storage), visualization, networking and cloud services (SaaS, IaaS, PaaS). By expanding the awareness of, and ability to access and deploy CI resources and services (provided on and between campuses, as well as those provided by federal agencies and other state, regional, national and international CI providers) we will start students on their journey to becoming a CI student champion/mentor within their community.

Participants will attend a kick-off/orientation meeting at Clemson University, and begin a regularly scheduled on-line training program presented by leaders in each topic area through September 2012. Students will receive full financial support for travel for the program. This includes expense coverage for travel to attend a kick-off and orientation meeting at Clemson University, and an end-of-year finale meeting at a location to be determined. Successful completion of the training program will qualify students to attend SC12 (all expenses paid) http://sc12.supercomputing.org/ in Salt Lake City, Utah, where students will participate as certified “Technical Student Volunteers” assisting in booths on the Exhibit Floor or performing other technical duties as needed. During the course of the program, we will host on-line training seminars twice a month. At the culmination of the program, students will be asked to evaluate their campus CI capabilities based on what they have learned. This will provide a worthwhile service to many campuses.
